Voith has introduced a new electric drive system for city buses. The drive system has been mounted as a demonstrator prototype in a Solaris Urbino bus, but can be integrated into vehicles from other manufacturers without restrictions.
Voith explained that the achievable range primarily depends on the battery, which is acquired from an internationally renowned supplier. Voith is currently using a lithium-iron-phosphate battery, but the electric drive system is designed in such a way that it can work together with any battery technology.
The system utilizes a liquid-cooled permanent magnet motor with high-efficiency inverter and smart energy management system. It delivers 260 kW output power and 2250 Nm torque.
At IAA, Voith will also introduce its new DIWA NXT transmission for buses that features a mild-hybrid system with an optional 48V central recuperation unit (CRU) and offers an optimal gear ratio through an additional overdrive gear for inter-city applications.
The optional mild-hybrid system delivers a continuous power of 25 kW with peak power of 35 kW. It recuperates energy in downhill and deceleration phases and makes it available to the vehicle’s electrical system via the battery and a DC/DC converter. The CRU is highly integrated into the flywheel housing between the engine and the transmission and requires almost no additional installation space.
Start of production for Voith’s DIWA NXT is expected early 2021.
